SOASE was sort of the real-time equivalent to MMO2 in terms of having that “it” factor, although the exceptional Stellaris is a worthy contender to the science fiction RTS throne.īut I have always wondered- why aren’t there any games out there that allow you to take command of the fleets themselves? I’d always dreamt of playing out Star Wars-types of battles with other humans, each of us helming individual ships, or even entire task forces. But not since the now classic Sins of a Solar Empire (2008) has a game really had such a massive effect on the entire real-time space genre. On the real-time front, space combat games have fared…well…okay. Although many turn-based space games have strived to live up to MOO2’s legacy, none have fully captured the same magic that venerated and classic title did, not even the great Galactic Civilization series. The first one to gain critical acclaim was the magnificent Master of Orion 2, which hit the gaming world like a hurricane way back in 1996. Siege platforms lets you bomb them out even if you need to retreat them to some repair bays for a while.Space combat games have had a pretty long and storied past within the digital gaming realm. Vulkoras - This one is pretty gimmicky, but if your opponent's homeworld is close rushing two of these to bomb out their homeworld occasionally works. Power Surge makes this thing nearly invincible early game while disruptive strikes can cripple any titans that show up later (or your opponents first capitalship). Kortul - I may be biased as this thing is my favorite capitalship, despite being an advent player. Also works well with the classic Vasari starbase rush since it can heal the starbase. Skirantra - Repair Cloud and free bombers make this a very solid combat focused starting cap, especially if there are a lot of rich planets with heavy cruisers guarding them. I guess you can try Halcyons if you want to rush but I usually just get one as the second cap. That shield restore is actually more important than colonizing. Honestly, you really need to start with a Progenitor Mothership. Plus with salvage teams this thing is surprisingly hard to kill. Particularly good at dealing with corvettes that you see a lot of early game. Plus it lets you bomb out planets faster.Ĭorsev - I'm told its making a comeback in MP because it has a good Area of Effect (AoE) damage ability even at level 1 in demo squads. Get this thing to level 6 so it can learn missile barrage and melt your opponents fleets. Used less in Rebellion since Corvettes make it hard to retreat capitalships. And since your homeworld gives you much of your starting income it often cripples the enemy before they get started. If you start near your opponents homeworld, buy 2 capitalship levels on this thing and steal 60% of your enemy's homeworld income. Sova Carrier - Back in the final days of Diplomacy, this was one of the most common capitalship starts thanks to one ability, Embargo. A battleship may beat a colony frigate 1v1 without abilities but not by as much as you'd expect.Īnyone, here are some other viable capitalship starts, though the benefit of some may not be a factor except in multiplayer. The main thing that makes capitalships different are their special abilities, not their stats. Honestly colony caps are not that outgunned compared to normal caps.
